Think of it like folders on your computer. you can have a folder inside another folder. The same is true for symbols. You can have a symbol inside another symbol. This helps to quickly get the right bits of your character into the right place fast. This also helps you character look the same all the time. If you move an eye a little it can have a huge impact on the design of the character.
